Besides the 75 district headquarters, seven other towns having
population of over one lakh will be covered under NULM to provide
skilled wage employment opportunities to the urban poor, an official
spokesperson said.
The decision to bring these 82 towns under NULM was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.
The mission aims at providing shelters equipped with essential services to the urban homeless in a phased manner.
In addition to this, it seeks to address livelihood concerns of the urban street vendors by facilitating access to suitable spaces, institutional credit, social security and skills for accessing emerging market opportunities.
NULM has specific focus on primary issues pertaining to urban poverty such as skill up-gradation, entrepreneurship development and credit availability, the spokesperson added.
