Government sanctions Rs 10 crore to CRRI for mapping accident spots in Delhi

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said, "The CRRI will identify the regular accident spots in the capital and find out road infrastructure deficiencies which are major cause of recurring of accidents at same spots, as per a statement from CRRI.
   
It will also suggest  engineering interventions for implementation of appropriate improvement measures to curtail accidents at the same spots, he said.
   
Gadkari said though a some black spots have already been identified, accident spots keep changing.
   
"Many spots or road sections that have similar features show a high frequency of accidents. This means that the particular road environment instigates inappropriate driver responses leading to accidents," he said, adding to identify and examine these locations and to characterise the safety deficiencies are a challenge for road engineers.
   
He said similar funds will be offered to various states in the country to identify black spots and find engineering measures to rectify them. The Road Ministry will provide 50 percent of the cost for road engineering measures to the states.

Parliament nod to Motor Vehicles Bill likely in next session: Nitin Gadkari

"I am confident that we will get Parliament nod on the new Bill in the next session. It will transform the entire sector, making it transparent and corruption-free," Gadkari told reporters after launching a web portal for online approval for movement of heavy cargo.
   
Seeking to come down heavily on traffic offenders, the government on Tuesday proposed steep penalties of up to Rs 3 lakh along with a minimum 7-year imprisonment for death of a child in certain circumstances, besides huge fines for driving violations.
   
Gadkari said launch of the web portal for online approval of movement of Over Dimensional (OD) and Over Weight Cargo (OWC) has removed one of the biggest hurdles on the way of 'Make In India' campaign.

"In realising 'Make In India' dream, one of the biggest hurdles has been with the launch of this e-portal. It will save time by offering an opportunity to save time and avoid transit delays in movement of equipment of national importance by Modular Hydraulic Axle Trailers," he said.
   
Apart from this massive digitalisation initiative, the government has ensured installation of electronic tolling systems across 108 toll plazas in the country.

PM Jal Marg Yojna, dry ports to boost shipping sector: Nitin Gadkari

"Ninety per cent of the Exim cargo in India is transported through ships but the contribution of domestic cargo in it is only 10 per cent...In a bid to boost water transport, we have requested the Prime Minister to launch PM Jal Marg Yojna, which will change the face of India," Road Transport, Highways
and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari said.
  
Use of rivers for transportation were behind the booming economy of cities like Amsterdam and Spain and "we are formulating a bill that would allow converting any river into a waterway," he said in his statement in regard to two bills, relating to prevention of marine pollution and welfare of seafarers, which were later passed by the House.
  
"Shipping industry is in a very bad shape. We are making every possible effort to revive it. Dry and satellite ports would be set up in states like Uttar Pradesh and Telangana. We  are also taking steps to double the capacity of our 12 major ports," he said.
  
Gadkari said there were about six lakh Indian seafarers and to increase their numbers government was taking steps to facilitate easier loans to SC/ST and minorities.
  
The government is committed to reducing traffic burden from roads, which account for about 1.5 lakh deaths per annum and promote water transportation where transportation cost is barely 50 paise a km in comparison rupee one by railways and Rs 1.5 through roads.
  
Transportation of cargo through Varanasi to Haldia has already been started, he said.
  
On waste disposal system, he said government was sensitive to it and would ensure that seas and rivers were not polluted.
