Obstructionism should not make headlines: Venkaiah Naidu

In an apparent reference to the Opposition stalling Parliament during the Winter Session, he said the media reports prominently that "so and so leader came to Parliament and did not allow Parliament to function, as if it is a great thing. It is like somebody came and then murdered somebody and then you try to give him a headline".   
"Media must play that role, that responsible role and a constructive role. What is happening unfortunately in this country is constructive thing or constructive debate is no news. Destructive approach or obstructive approach becomes a big news," he said addressing a gathering on the occasion of inauguration of the World Toilet Summit here.
  
Naidu's statement came a day after Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley came out against media trials. He said courts come under tremendous pressure in high profile cases and media should introspect as parallel trials prejudice the environment.
  
Noting that those disrupting Parliament proceedings figure on the front page, Naidu, who holds Parliamentary Affairs and Urban Develoment portfolios, said that sensationalism and obstructionism are not going to help anybody.
  
"If you go to well of the house and do some nonsensical thing and throw some paper or raise the mike, then you are on the front page. This sensationalism, obstructionism is not going to help anybody. You must understand this," he added.

The Minister, however, appreciated the newspapers which are reporting on various social issues.
"Lot of newspapers have taken up this cause of Swachh Bharat. They are devoting some space, they are reporting about good practises," he noted.

Role of Private sector crucial in boosting growth rate: Venkaiah

He also said that the government has recently raised basic excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 2 per litre – without increasing the retail prices -- which would provide badly needed finances for infrastructure development.

"To increase the growth rate, we have to improve resource, efficiency, promote technological innovations and close the infrastructure gap," Naidu said at the inauguration of 3-day Builders Association of India Conference, BAICON, here.
    
"The role of private sector is crucial in these efforts as it can provide new knowledge and technology for enabling development of sustainable infrastructure and also for raising the financial resources required to bring about the change," he said.

On the Goods and Services Taxes Bill, he said, GST was introduced in the Parliament after taking the confidence of the States.
    
"GST will simplify and harmonise Indirect Tax system in the country. Like other sectors, construction sector will also be a significant beneficiary of this reform", he said.
    
Taking a dig at previous UPA government, Naidu said "the opposition parties have not yet understood the people's mandate. Despite getting such humiliating defeat in general election they are continuing with anti-government policies".

"They followed anti-people policies while in power, now also they are doing the same by opposing the development and reform oriented bills in Rajya Sabha," he said.

Sadhvi remark: P J Kurien asks Opposition parties, government to end logjam

Kurien adjourned the House for the day at about 3.15 PM after it failed to transact any business for the fourth consecutive day today with an agitated opposition insisting on the sacking of the Minister.

"Leaders of the opposition parties and government should sit together and work out a solution by Monday. The Chair cannot take a decision," Kurien, who was in the Chair, observed.

His observations came after the House witnessed four adjournments before the Chair called it a day as opposition uproar continued over the demand and members insisted on a resolution to condemn the Sadhvi's remarks.

"There is an impasse between the government and the opposition and as long as this issue is not resolved we will not allow the House to run," said Deputy Leader of Opposition Anand Sharma when Kurien pleaded that private members' bill be taken up.

TMC disturbed, its conduct unparliamentary: Venkaiah Naidu

The BJP also asked Mamata Banerjee's party to focus on governance in West Bengal and not support elements giving it a bad name instead of making baseless allegations like these.

“Definitely they are frustrated, disturbed and perturbed. That is why they are doing all these things. Due to the massive response BJP president got yesterday, they fear that Trinamool Congress is losing ground,” Venkaiah Naidu said.

"But these sort of things will not help. I appeal to friends in TMC, please improve your governance there and try to purge the elements who are giving a bad name to you. Don't support them for the sake of defending them and don't make baseless allegations," Naidu said at a press conference here.
  
Naidu, who is Parliamentary Affairs Minister and a senior BJP leader, said his party president is a respectable figure who is credited with victory of the party in many states and TMC should not do such things.

"He is battered for the response that he got in Kolkata rally yesterday. The other day you used the word 'dhokhabaazi' (for Narendra Modi)...after all he is the Prime Minister of the country. You should not do these things," he said.   

Naidu asked Trinamool Congress to understand the spirit and mandate of the people of the country and cooperate in improving parliamentary system and help in smooth running of both the Houses.   

"If you have something substantiated, we can discuss...You don't have anything specific and you bring something which is unauthorised," he said.

Taking a dig at Trinamool MPs for displaying red diaries in their bid to target Shah in both Houses as well as outside Parliament, Naidu said, "The TMC has become red. There is no problem as long as it is not after the blood of people. Till yesterday red was an anathema to them. I don't know if they are coming close to red (apparent reference to Left parties)."

BJP's national secretary Shrikant Sharma rejected all allegations by TMC as "false and baseless" and said Mamata Banerjee's party has been "rattled" due to the massive response that Shah received at Kolkata rally.   

"People of West Bengal have taken to the streets to usher in a change in the government. Instead of ushering in development in the state, the TMC government in West Bengal is more interested in saving the accused in the Saradha chit fund scam, who usurped the money belonging to the poor.

"The Mamata Banerjee government is also trying to protect the accused in the Burdwan blasts case. The TMC regime is protecting the Bangladeshi infiltrators, which poses a real threat to India's security. The people of West Bengal have seen the real face of Trinamool Congress and are ready to throw them out and have taken to the streets," Sharma said.

Naidu said the credibility of Trinamool Congress has gone down and the more they raise such things the more it will reflect on them.

"Let them campaign across the state. The more they talk on this, it will reflect on them. Their credibility is going down...You are expected to be more mature," he said.

Earlier criticising the action of TMC MPs, Naidu said, "you can't just bring objects from outside and then flash them in the house. You may get cheap publicity but the purpose will not be served. If there is something substantial, there are ways and means of giving notice and getting the issue discussed."

Targeting TMC leaders, Sharma said, "They have no right to take names and then make issues. So on all these counts, what the Trinamool did in the House today is totally unparliamentary, that is why there is no need to take notice of it."

TMC and BJP members today targeted each other in Parliament, leading to clashes and walkouts.

TMC alleged that a diary of jailed Sahara group chief Subrata Roy contained the name of a senior leader of the saffron party, leading to clashes and a walkout by TMC members in both Houses.
