Heart attacks, suicides killing more CRPF men than Naxals: Report

Amongst the diseases, heart attack and cardiac illness instances have claimed the maximum number of lives of the Central Reserve Police Force men and women as over 600 personnel have succumbed to them between 2009 and 2014.

The report, prepared to showcase issues and challenges being faced by the most important internal security force of the country, said, "hard and harsh" working conditions in the force have led to "adverse bearing" on the physical and mental state of CRPF officers and personnel.
  
While over 2,900 personnel of the force died due to diseases and non-operational tasks during the said period, 252 personnel were killed during operations or security tasks during the comparative period.

Amongst the other major medical causes which claimed the lives of CRPF troops are suicides (207 cases), cancer (231 cases), malaria (102) and HIV/AIDS (153 cases). This was the same time the force saw maximum operational action in various Naxal violence affected states of the country.
  
A total of 614 cases of death due to heart attack or cardiac diseases were recorded during the same period, making it the most alarming cause of medical challenge for the three-lakh personnel strong central paramilitary.

Responsibility will be fixed for dumping of martyrs' belongings: Rajnath

"My sentiments were also hurt. I told the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister (Raman Singh) that he should order an inquiry and fix responsibility for the incident.
   
"He called me back to say that a magisterial probe has been ordered," Home Minister Rajnath Singh said.

While the postmortem of 14 deceased CRPF personnel was going in a government hospital, their blood-stained uniforms and shoes were dumped in dustbin, sparking outrage.
   
Earlier, Tamradhwaj Sahu and K C Venugopal, both of Congress, expressed concern over the incident.
   
Sahu said it was an "insult to their martyrdom" and demanded explanation from the government.

CRPF orders inquiry into blood-stained uniforms found in dump

Acting Central Reserve Police Force chief R C Tayal said the inquiry would be conducted by the Inspector General of the state and a report would be submitted soon.
  
"We have ordered an inquiry to find out how it happened. Serious action will be taken against the guilty. We suspect some political workers took these items from the lower staff in the hospital in Raipur. We are looking into it," Tayal, who was in Raipur after the December 1 encounter, said.

14 CRPF personnel, including two officers, were killed in the encounter in Sukma district of the state on Monday. Camouflaged pattern uniforms like the one worn by CRPF troops in operations and jungle boots were found lying in the garbage dump near Ambedkar Hospital in Raipur on Wednesday, sparking an outrage.

This is the same hospital were the autopsy of the slain soldiers was done after their bodies were flown-in on Tuesday from the site of the encounter in south Bastar's Sukma.

Officials said these items, worn by combat soldiers, are handed over to local police as per procedure who register a case under sections of the IPC and they are called a "case property" and not even handed over to the next of kin.

"My message is that we have full respect for our martyrs. If I need to say sorry (to the families of those killed) I will do that. Normal process in such cases is that these (clothes and boots) are taken by the case investigating police officer. Let me get the details (of the inquiry) and we will take required action," Tayal said.

Opposition Congress leaders had said the incident showed "insensitivity and disrespect" of the authorities and demanded an apology from the BJP government in the state.

President condemns attack on CRPF troopers

In his message to Chhattisgarh Governor Balramji Das Tandon, the president said, "I am shocked and dismayed to learn about the tragic attack by left wing extremists on security personnel in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh on Monday in which a number of persons belonging to the CRPF have lost their lives and suffered injuries."

"I condemn this act of violence on our security forces in the strongest of terms and call upon authorities concerned to spare no efforts in bringing the perpetrators to justice as soon as possible," he added.

Offering heartfelt condolences to the grieving families of the victims, Mukherjee said, "I call upon the state government and other agencies to provide all possible aid to the bereaved families who have lost their near and dear ones as well as medical assistance to the injured, whom I wish speedy recovery.

"Maoists on Monday gunned down 13 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers engaged in an operation aimed at flushing out the rebels from a thickly forested area of Chhattisgarh.
