Kiran Bedi Missing From Posters as BJP's Big Guns Campaign for Delhi Polls

The BJP's chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi is missing from posters and some election speeches as the party changes the pitch of its campaign in Delhi dramatically. With seven days to go for polling, party president and chief strategist Amit Shah has deployed the BJP's biggest guns to take on Arvind Kejriwal of the Aam Aadmi Party.

Many BJP posters in Delhi constituencies now feature only Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mr Shah and the local party candidate.

While Ms Bedi - who joined the party just days ago and was immediately announced presumptive CM - continued to criss-cross Delhi with her roadshows, the party's focused attack on her main rival Arvind Kejriwal is being fronted by senior party leaders.

Two central ministers posed a second installment of five questions to Mr Kejriwal.

Tomorrow, PM Modi will address a rally at CBD Ground in East Delhi. Today, Mr Shah spoke at a rally in Janakpuri and made not a mention of Kiran Bedi. Union minister Smriti Irani addressed another rally and she too did not mention Ms Bedi.

Shock defeat of BJP in Cantonment Board polls in Varanasi, Lucknow

In Varanasi, the Lok Sabha seat of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, all the seven seats were bagged by Independents.
  
BJP had for the first time fielded or supported candidates in Cantonment Board polls. In Lucknow, the home turf of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP lost on all eight seats to Independents.
  
Asked to comment on the party's poor performance in these elections, BJP state chief Laxmikant Bajpai said most of the candidates lost as they were not given official party symbol.
  
In Varanasi, the seven seats were won by Sangita, Shailendra Singh, Rajkumar Das, Masood Hussain, Chandra Keshav, Shahnawaz Ali and Shailja Srivastava – all Independents.
  
In Lucknow, Jagdish Prasad, Pramod Sharma, Rupa Devi, Swati Yadav, Amit Kumar Shukla, Anjum Aara, Sanjay Kumar Vaish and Reena Singhania -- all Independents -- bagged the eight seats.
  
In Agra too, the performance of BJP was not good as it won just one ward, with Independents romping home at seven seats. BJP had contested these seats on party symbol.
  
Polling was held on Sunday and results of Varanasi and Lucknow were declared on Monday. Commenting on BJP's rout, UP Cabinet Minister and Samajwadi Party leader Ambika Chowdhury said the results had proved BJP's tall claims hollow.

Niti Aayog being decked up to welcome top functionaries

Niti Aayog has replaced the 65-year old Planning Commission, a vestige of the socialist era.

The room of Panagariya, which was earlier occupied by his predecessor Montek Singh Ahluwalia is being refurbished for the new occupant.

The staff has even put the name plate of Panagariya on the door, though he is expected to take charge only in a couple of days.

The landmark sign board in front of Yojana Bhawan has already been repainted as Niti Aayog. The rooms to seat the other full time members of the Aayog is also being prepared before their joining.

The anxious staff of the Yojana Bhawan appeared to be heaving a sign of relief after the government announced formation of the Niti Aayog on January 1.

Government had announced the appointment of Noted economist, Panagariya as Vice-Chairman of the Niti Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India) and its other members on Monday.

Economist Bibek Debroy and former DRDO chief V K Saraswat were appointed as full-time members by the Prime Minister who is the formal head of the Aayog.

Coal India struggles to produce half of normal output amid strike

Unionized miners at the world's top coal producer are protesting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's move to allow private companies to mine and sell the fuel for the first time in 42 years. Modi's ministers have said that increasing competition is key to ending India's power shortage.

But miners fear this will lead to pay and job cuts at Coal India, which has come to be seen as an exemplar for deep-rooted inefficiency in state enterprise.


Union leaders met top Coal Ministry officials for three hours on Tuesday evening but did not reach an agreement, said SQ Zama, secretary general of the Indian National Mineworkers Federation.

BJP seeks Mamata apology for TMC MP's remarks against PM

BJP said the Trinamool MP has not only transgressed parliamentary ethics but has also hurt the pride of 125 crore Indians by his "undignified and unparliamentary" remarks.
  
"The BJP condemns in the strongest of words the indecent, undignified and unparliamentary remarks of TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The BJP demands a public apology from Mamata Banerjee for this deplorable act...," BJP national secretary Shrikant Sharma said.
  
He said Mamata Banerjee's silence on this "undignified act" of her party MP brings to light the double standard of Trinamool Congress. "The moral failure of TMC leaders is the beginning of its political decline," he said.
  
"Through this undignified comment against the Prime Minister, not only has Kalyan Banerjee transgressed parliamentary ethics, but has hurt the pride of 125 crore Indians," he said.
  
Sharma said it is unfortunate that the TMC is hurting democratic values and parliamentary decorum. "This is condemnable. BJP condemns this audacious act of Kalyan Banerjee," he said.
  
Addressing a rally in Hooghly district last week, the Trinamool MP had made severe personal attacks against the Prime Minister and BJP leader in charge of West Bengal Siddharth Nath Singh.
  
The BJP leader said the TMC is "nervous" as a massive crowd turned up in the rally of BJP president Amit Shah in Kolkata on November 30.

Modi to address public functions in Nepal

Modi will reach Janakpur on November 25 from Patna, pray at the Ram-Janaki temple and address a public function there, a diplomatic source said.

He is likely to inaugurate some projects to be funded by the Indian government.

He is due to arrive in Nepal for his second official visit after becoming the prime minister in May.

However, this time Modi is coming to the Himalayan nation to attend the 18th SAARC summit on November 26-27.

Besides visiting Janakpur and Lumbini, Modi will visit Muktinath, another revered Hindu religious site. Modi will be in Muktinath on November 28 and return to Lumbini before leaving for New Delhi the same day, according to the itinerary.

Nepal Home Secretary Surya Silwal, Nepal Police chief Upendra Kanta Aryal, Indian ambassador Ranjit Rae and a team of Indian officials have inspected Janakpur.

On Thursday, senior Nepalese officials inspected Lumbini to assess the security situation.

Modi will get the highest security during the SAARC summit also to be attended by leaders of Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, said officials.

At Lumbini too, Modi is set to address the locals.
